Catherine Says:

On Thursday, May 1st, I saw the preview of GREAT Theatre’s production of Seussical the Musical at the Paramount Theatre.
Seussical the Musical is based on Dr. Seuss’s characters in Horton Hear’s a Who.  In the play, Horton the Elephant goes for a walk in the woods and finds a speck of dust.  He hears a small noise from the speck, so he picks it up and puts it safely on a clover.  Soon everybody notices the clover, especially the Sour Kangaroo, and thinks Horton is crazy.  But Horton knows that there are people on that speck and no matter what happens, he vows to never give up on protecting the people, who are Whos.  But, the Whos on that speck don’t know they are living on a speck, until the Who Mayor hears Horton and begins talking to him. Good and bad adventures happen at almost every moment.  The Mayor’s son, Jojo, also hears Horton and talks to him about being alone in the universe.  The Cat in the Hat also appears to cheer up Jojo and encourage him to keep thinking.
Before the beginning of the performance I liked the video on the screen.  It was very funny.  Thing #1 and Thing #2 were in the video and they were dancing in the elevator on the way to GREAT studios. It was also funny when they introduced GREAT’s 2008-2009 season; they flew with Peter Pan, marched with Madeleine, flew again on a magic carpet with Aladdin, and danced with High School Musical 2.
At the beginning of the show I liked it when the actors held Dr. Seuss books in their hands and danced.  The choreography looked like a lot of fun.  The scenery was very colorful and made the stage look like a jungle.
I also liked seeing the musicians on the stage.  My favorites were the piano and the synthesizer, but there were other great instruments including trumpet, clarinet, saxophone, flute, violin, bass, guitar, and drums.    There are also audience chairs on the stage!  It would have been fun to sit in those chairs and see the actors up close.
The Cat in the Hat is the funniest character. I loved it when he played the piano with the funny sunglasses.  It made him look very entertaining and spunky.  It was also  funny when he played a very funny French waiter wearing a  sombrero, a cool suit,  holding a tray of drinks.
My favorite character was Gertrude, the bird with only one feather for a tail. She was very funny when she sang.  I liked the feather on the back of Gertrude’s costume.  It was very poofy and cute and it made her character come to life. It was funny when the long feathers behind Gertrude’s back began to grow longer in each scene.
I also loved the glowing fish in the audience.  It made it look neat; like I was in the deep, deep water of the ocean.  But most of all, I loved the lights in the back of the stage that glimmered with different colors.
I think GREAT Theatre and their actors are very, very talented and special.  But most of all funny!  You should get some tickets and see one of GREAT Theatre’s plays soon.

Do you like green eggs and ham?

Well if you do you’ll love Dr. Seuss’ Seussical the Musical.  It’s a compilation of Dr. Seuss’ world renowned books that come to life in bright colors on stage.  Horton learn’s that every person matters.  Can Gertrude get Horton’s attention?  Will maizy be back in time so that Horton can save Who?  Well if you come to see this story on stage, “there’s no telling what may ensue!”
